New research suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
